The building forms two parts, the historic front building which houses the old Great Western Railway offices including the splendid boardroom used by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, with a magnificent central staircase for the full height of the building.
The second part of the site is the long engine shed, built over three storeys which housed the building operations for the Great Western Railways trams and locomotives. We were chosen for this project because of the adaptability and sensitivity demonstrated in how we were going to approach the refurbishment process.
The buildings had not been used for some time and our task was to create 21st century high tech office accommodation within the listed building.
There was very little historical data in respect of the building and structure, so we had to work very closely with both the architect, structural engineer and of course the client, to identify issues as early as possible once we started the project and, of course, the fabric of the building and existing finishes could not be changed or damaged within the process.
All this work had to be carried out in a phased manner, as we had to complete each floor one at a time and allow occupation of the floors as we progressed.
Furthermore, we had to be sympathetic and aware of adjacent users of buildings which included a nursery school and a coffee shop, as well as a public car park surrounding the building.
The project was completed on programme and to budget.
