This design & build project is in the heart of the Southmead Hospital site which in itself created significant obstacles during the construction process, with little or no space for storage or deliveries and the need to be aware of the live and sensitive surrounding buildings.
After demolition, a new reception area was created which forms a link between the existing five Victorian workhouse buildings that have been refurbished.
The new 'Cherry Tree Centre' includes a large airy reception and waiting area, two mammography suites, a film room, procedure and consulting rooms, along with a Macmillan care centre, counselling rooms and a resource library. The new unit has clean and dirty utility rooms.
Before the construction work of the buildings commenced, full surveys of all structures were required. Resulting in a full re-roof and repair of rotten timbers and a total strip-out of the existing buildings to expose original detailing of these historically important buildings and these were incorporated into many existing 'features' as possible of the new design.
The new build section was formed from a steel frame with curtain walling and brick panelling incorporating a number of different brickwork bonds.
The project achieved a very good BREEAM rating.
